Happy Halloween
Tonight is Halloween and youth across the country are going to be all throughout the cities and parties with strangers. We need to stay safe tonight meaning staying clear of sharing drugs, alcohol, or walking alone, but one thing that goes unmentioned is an increasing danger for college students; sexual assault.
The number of sexual assaults on college campuses is increasingly at an alarming rate. More and more during parties do these attacks happen when the assailants go away uncharged and unharmed. I recently watched the documentary The Hunting Ground on Netflix and was alarmed by this injustice. The video itself notes accidents occurring in Halloween nights when unassuming get rides home or spiked drinks given to them and soon find themselves naked, battered, and bruised.
Now I know that idea may seem to put a damper on your plans but that by no means is to say don’t go out and have a good time, but do so in an organized and cautious manner. Make sure to go out in groups with fully charged cellphones and plans of action if anything suspicious is to occur. Come up with a meeting place if you are to get separated from the group and a code word to get out of potentially scary situations.
Now, go out, dance the night away, and have a safe and spooktacular Halloween. Also if you want to check out The Hunting Ground check the documentary section of Netflix. The film includes actual retelling of events from the victims themselves and the music stylings of Lady Gaga.
